Hluhluwe is a small town in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, situated on the elephant coast between iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park on the banks of the Hluhluwe River. This area is well known for its national parks, natural diversity and cultural heritage. Although relatively undeveloped, the area is of growing interest to international tourists and travellers. Timber, sugar and pineapples are intensively grown in the area, which produces over 90% of South Africa's queen pineapples. Hluhluwe is considered the hub of tourism in KwaZulu-Natal and there is an abundance of accommodation facilities, from budget accommodation to five-star game lodges. Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve is the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa and is 96 000 hectares in extent. It is also home to the big five. iSimangaliso Wetland Park’s centre piece, Lake St. Lucia, is home to large numbers of hippos, crocodiles, pelicans and flamingos.
