Originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, but shortened in 1902 as the name was too long for the postal service, Hermanus is a town on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa, approximately 115 km’s from Cape Town. Although famous for its Southern Right whale watching during the southern winter to spring seasons , the town is also a popular retirement location. The Old Harbour Museum contains several exhibitions that explain the whaling industry. There are also boasts magnificent beaches such as Voëlklip Beach and the broad Grotto Beach, overlooking Walker Bay. The town is littered with hotels, guesthouses, B & B’s as well as self-catering houses and caravan camping parks. Numerous activities are available which include a wine route, adventure activities, arts and crafts and organised tours. Hermanus is a town that has something for everyone.
