Madikwe Game Reserve
Just a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Johannesburg, Madikwe Game Reserve rests in the basin of the fabled Marico River in the Northwest province. This vast 75 000 hectare malaria free reserve boasts a plethora of wildlife and an amazing diversity of habitats. The reserve was proclaimed in 1991 and the subsequent Operation Phoenix saw a multitude of animal species relocated to the reserve. The reserve currently boasts more than 60 species of mammals, including the big five and over 350 species of birds have been recorded. Madikwe is unique in that it lies in a transition zone between the bushveld and the edges of the Kalahari, where a number of rare species occur naturally.
