Samara Private Game Reserve
A mere 2.5 hour drive from Port Elizabeth lies the award winning and “heart stoppingly beautiful” Samara Private Game Reserve in the Great Karoo. The name “Karoo” comes from an ancient San word meaning “Land of Great Thirst”. The Great Karoo is a massive semi-desert region of more than 400 000 square kilometres, stretching over the provinces of the Eastern, Northern and Western Cape. Samara is a lifelong project for the Tompkins family and a stepping stone in the creation of South Africa's third largest protected area of 1.3 million acres. Accommodation consists of two 5 star lodges, namely Karoo Lodge and The Manor.
