A spa is a spa is a spa, right? Wrong. They may all offer comparable treatments and have similar facilities, but there is nothing quite like a spa in the African bushveld. Completely immersed in nature, it is the perfect setting to completely zone out, relax and ease into a different state of mind. Take for example the Spa at Bushman’s Kloof, which has just been voted Best Spa in Africa & Indian Ocean at the Global Spa & Wellness Awards.

By their own admission, the surroundings are therapy in themselves and they literally roll out the red carpet. Facilities include a crystal steam room, a riverside gazebo and tranquillity lounge all set at the foothills of the Cedarburg mountains. A treatment at the riverside gazebo would be our choice for obvious reasons. The Waters of Royal Malewane Bush Spa in the Greater Kruger National Park, and another award-winning spa, offer hot and cold African baths and a heated lap pool. Yes, you read that correctly. They even have private casitas for relaxation or treatments. Pure indulgence. Is it starting to sink in now?

The spa with possibly the most amazing setting of all is the spa at Ulusaba Rock Lodge in the world renowned Sabi Sand Game Reserve. The view from high up on the hill is nothing short of spectacular, and aptly described as “being on top of the world”.  Their signature treatment is an anti-ageing solution that intensively hydrates the face and body with a massage, aroma steam and shower. Let’s “face” it, what’s not to like about an anti-aging treatment, and this is the Royals Royce.

So, the next time someone tells you that a spa is a spa is a spa, you may want to enlighten them. A luxury bush spa is the ultimate experience in relaxation. Okay, back to reality.
